Grayscale Files to List "The Zcash ETF" on NYSE Arca
On August 21, Grayscale's sponsor filed an 8-K and a fifth amendment to its S-3 shelf registration with the SEC: Grayscale Zcash Trust shares are anticipated to begin trading on NYSE Arca on or about August 25 under the ticker ZCSH, alongside a formal name change from "Grayscale Zcash Trust" to "The Zcash ETF." The trust — currently OTC-traded, custodied by Coinbase Custody, priced against the CoinDesk Zcash Benchmark Rate Index — would become the first Zcash product listed on a major U.S. national securities exchange, pending regulatory approval. The filing also discloses a nonbinding potential contribution of roughly 200,000 ZEC and a 2.5% annual sponsor fee. Nothing is final until the registration statement is effective, but this is a serious, SEC-verifiable step, not a rumor. 8-K filing · S-3/A
Cypherpunk Mining Launches — Winklevoss Capital, 18% of Network Hashrate
Cypherpunk Technologies (Nasdaq: CYPH) launched Cypherpunk Mining on August 18: a $33.33 million equity-financed acquisition of a 4,902-machine Bitmain Z15 Pro fleet from Moria Mining, an affiliate of Winklevoss Treasury Investments. The fleet runs roughly 4.2 GSol/s — by Cypherpunk's own estimate, about 18% of total Zcash network hashrate — deployed across U.S. facilities, making it the largest active Zcash mining operation in the world. Mining industry veteran Kevin Zhang joins as Head of Mining. The deal was structured entirely in equity (a pre-funded warrant for 43.29 million shares), not cash. Cypherpunk already holds 323,394 ZEC (~1.9% of circulating supply) and is targeting 5%; the company frames mining as a second accumulation route alongside open-market purchases. NU7 Coinholder Vote: Snapshot Is Tomorrow
The snapshot block is locked in: 3,459,350, expected August 24 at ~19:00 UTC. Any ZEC spendable in Ironwood at that height is eligible to vote, even if moved afterward. Sean Bowe published an FAQ this week and confirmed the mechanics: the vote runs on a dedicated chain using homomorphic encryption and private information retrieval (PIR) so no one can see how you voted, and it's already compatible with Keystone hardware wallets. Voting opens August 25 and runs through September 14.
Both ZODL and Vizor shipped support ahead of the deadline — ZODL 3.10.0 added coinholder polling with Ironwood support, and Vizor is also confirmed. Five questions are on the ballot: NSM issuance smoothing, NSM reissuance timing, Sprout deprecation, faster block times (75s → 25s), and the overall NU7 schedule. Minimum legitimacy threshold: 1,000,000 ZEC. FAQ · ZecBlock governance tracker
Zakura Teases Cryptography Speedups Up to 350%
Sean Bowe: "We're about to publish so many new optimizations and improvements for Zcash's cryptography it is actually insane. Some of them only help 20%, some of them 350%, but there are so many of them they compound and produce unbelievable performance improvements across the stack." Two concrete results have been demonstrated so far, neither shipped yet: Zakura measured a 15x improvement on the Sinsemilla hash function with no GPU acceleration (would cut sync and validation time for full nodes, miners, and wallets if it lands), and separately adapted libsecp256k1's modular inversion technique to the Pasta curves for a 4.6x gain. Zooko independently confirmed the Sinsemilla benchmark, calling it "a neat technique leveraging a cryptographic security reduction" that he thinks "will actually make UX better for Zcash users" — future tense, since none of this has been released yet. The gains borrow from outside research as well as Valar Group's own work, and ebfull noted the improvements make it easier to modernize rand crate usage across Zcash's cryptography. No full changelog yet — this is a "coming soon" story, but the scale of the claims (compounding 20%–350% gains across the stack) makes it worth watching closely next week. ebfull · zooko on the 15x result
Shielded Labs Launches Zero-Indexer to Close an IP-Privacy Gap
Today, submitting a transaction through lightwalletd or Zaino lets an attacker who controls or watches the indexer link your IP address directly to your transactions and amounts — no other privacy defense helps once that link exists. Shielded Labs, Caution, Zec.rocks, and Stardust are deploying zero-indexer, a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) enclave service that breaks this link by batching requests from multiple operators and delaying broadcast. It's part of Zero, Shielded Labs' open-source enterprise Zcash infrastructure suite, and is designed to be a drop-in replacement wallets can route through today. Independent auditors will publish verification status until wallets can verify the enclave directly. This closes a real gap for anyone migrating funds through the Ironwood turnstile right now.
